Designing a Senior Portrait session that is ALL ABOUT YOU
Bring something to your session that reflects your personality, talents or hobbies. Bring a musical instrument, sporting equipment or uniform. This session is ALL ABOUT YOU so bring something to help bring that out photographically. Since I only work on location, we could go to the lake and photograph you skiing in the summer or snowboarding in the winter! Are you fond of your car? Let’s include some photographs of you with your car! Bring your pet.
Before your session, I will talk to you to custom design your session. In advance of this discussion, think about your interests and how you would want to be photographed. I enjoy getting creative with senior portrait sessions so please suggest locations or other ideas you may have so your portrait session will show your personality and interests. I try to ensure that every senior portrait session is different - just like every senior I photograph.
Clothing suggestions Keep it Simple:
YOU should be the main item of interest in your portrait, not your clothes. Therefore, keep a few things in mind when selecting your clothing. Have your clothes and accessories ready the night before your session. Select clothing that reflects your personality and style. Make certain your clothes are clean and free of wrinkles. Be aware of the number of clothing changes you are allowed in the session you have selected. For each outfit, put your accessories (including shoes) in a large ziplock bag and attach it to the hanger.
MAKE UP FOR GIRLS (AND GUYS)
It is recommended that everyone wear makeup to cover and minimize blemishes as well as powder to keep the shine off your face. Remember, a little goes a long way so don’t overdo it. Pay special attention to your eyes and lips. Darker pink lipsticks photograph better than a light pink lipstick. Do not wear lip gloss since it can make the lips look TOO SHINEY. Lips should look moist, not shiny. The lips should not look dry and cracked. AVOID GLITTER MAKEUP. Glitter appears as small white dots on your skin in a photograph. You will NOT like the way the glitter makeup appears in a photograph so do not use it!
GLASSES?
If you wear glasses all the time, you may want to wear them for your portraits. However, glare from the lights can ruin a portrait. Frequently, the glare is so prominent that you cannot see the individual’s eyes! To eliminate distracting glare and reflections, call your optician and arrange to either borrow a pair of empty frames like yours (with NO glass in them) or have the lenses removed from your own frames. Most opticians will do this for free if you give them a few days notice. If you choose to wear your glasses with the lenses in them and you see glare on the lenses in your final portraits, there is an additional charge to remove the glare in post processing.
HAIR
Please touch up your hair style after each clothing change. Bring a mirror, comb/brush and hairspray to your session for last minute touchups.
SUNTANS
It is important that you avoid spending too much time in the sun or the tanning both before your session. The use of self tanners will sometimes make you look orange due to the lighting used to create your portrait. In post processing, even if you have a very pale complexion, we will make you look more tanned but it’s almost impossible to fix a sunburned or peeling face. Tan lines from swimsuits or tank tops can be corrected in post processing but you will be charged an additional retouching fee. Suntans make your skin appear blotchy in a photograph. Peeling and dry skin shows in photographs and cannot be fixed in post processing.
ACNE
All portraits will be retouched before they are sent to the lab for printing. The proofs will not be retouched because retouching a single portrait can take 15-60 minutes. Please use a cover-up makeup on your blemishes to make them less noticeable.
FACIAL HAIR
Guys should remember to shave just before their session. Facial hair cannot be removed in post production. BRACES
If you are currently wearing braces, they are as much a part of you as your hairstyle or the clothes you wear. Don’t be self conscious about smiling. We can digitally remove your braces the your final portraits. However the price (per pose) for the removal of the upper braces is $45 and for the removal of both the upper and lower braces, the price is $85 per pose.
NAILS Girls:
PLEASE make certain your nail polish is in good repair. Get a manicure before your session or remove all traces of nail polish. Bright or dark colors of nail polish do NOT photograph well. Remember- we want your face to be the first thing that people look at when they see your photograph- NOT YOUR BRIGHT ORANGE NAIL POLISH. Your hands will be photographed during the portrait session so please make certain they are “camera ready.” If you are wearing sandals or flip flops the same goes for your toe nails- they will be seen!
Guys:
Please make certain your hands and nails are clean and free of any paint, oil, etc. Your hands will also be seen in the photograph. Nail polish and dirt from hands cannot be removed in post production.

SKIN TONE CONSIDERATIONS:
Regardless of whether those to be photographed have light or dark complexions, the face should always dominate in any portrait. Accordingly, the skin should be the lightest, brightest or most intense areas of the portrait. So, when a medium to dark background is used, all subjects photograph best in medium to dark tones, regardless of the skin tone.
CLOTHING FOR SMALL GROUPS
Couples or small groups should choose simple garments with the same color tone. When subjects are photographed in a mixture of light and dark tones together, there is visual confusion- the light colors appear to come forward and the dark colors recede. When this happens, one person appears dominant and the other person appears heavier than they really are.
CLOTHING FOR FAMILIESIn a group, proper clothing coordination is critical. When decorating a home, a main concern is the consideration of colors of the walls, carpets, drapes and furnishings. Similar coordination is necessary when choosing clothing for a group. Choose clothing in similar tonal ranges so no single member stands out. Clothing of solid colors with no large logos or imprinting appears best in a portrait. Clothing that is too bright or too light when compared to the rest of the group will make that person stand out. Proper clothing selection plays a significant role in the ultimate satisfaction you will have with he overall appearance of the portrait.
SPECIFIC CLOTHING SELECTIONS
Turtlenecks or V-Necks are flattering provided that neither is exaggerated in style. Avoid very wide or particularly deep V-Neck garments or bulky cowl neck sweaters that completely hide the neck. For close-up portraits LONG SLEEVES are essential- bare arms call attention to the arms and frequently make the arms look heavy (even in a very thin person).If feet will be photographed, ensure that shoes and stocking are in keeping with the visual intent of the portrait. Women being photographed in full length should wear long skirts or dark stocking to keep the eye from being directed to the legs and away from the face.Men should be clean shaven or facial hair should be carefully groomed. It is best that the hair be cut about one week before the portrait session.Memorable portraits take careful planning. The clothing you choose plays a vital role in the success of a portrait.CLOTHING FOR
INDIVIDUALS:
The goal of any fine art portrait is to direct the viewer's eyes to the face. All remaining elements are secondary. Individuals should wear long sleeved garments. If being photographed against a medium or dark background, dark tones of brown, gray, burgundy, green or blue are pleasing choices. Since darker clothing is slimming, it is often a good choice for close-up, full- length or three-quarter-length portraits if a medium to dark background is used. Bold stripes, plaids and checks and prints are visually confusing and do not photograph well. Against a dark background, Bright colors, such as pink and orange, will overwhelm the face and ruin a portrait. Light colors that approximate flash tones will Men the subject look very pale.
